The journal Biophysik edited by B. Rajewsky was founded in 1963. With Volume 11 (1974) the name Radiation and Environmental Biophysics was adopted. H. Muth was Managing Editor from Volume 7 (1970) to Volume 18/1 (1980) U. Hagen from Volume 18/2 (1980) and U. Hagen and A. M. Kellerer jointly from Volume 33/3 (1994) to Volume 35/3 (1996). Editor-in-Chief from Volume 35/4 (1996) is A. M. Kellerer. This journal is devoted to fundamental and applied issues in radiation research and biophysics. The topics include: Biophysics of ionizing radiation: radiation physics and chemistry radiation dosimetry radiobiology radioecology biophysical foundations of medical radiology nuclear medicine and radiation protection. Biophysics of non-ionizing radiations: ultraviolet visible and infrared light (including laser light) microwaves radiowaves low frequency electromagnetic fields sound and ultrasound. Biological effects of physical factors such as temperature pressure gravitational forces electric and magnetic fields. Biophysical aspects of the biosphere and space of ecosystems and their mathematical models and of transport processes of energy and substances in biotic systems. Risk assessment and risk modelling for radiation and environmental factors. Contributions to these topics may include theoretical-mathematical and experimental material. They can range from complex radiobiological phenomena to issues of health physics and environmental protection. Special emphasis is given to fundamental research - directly or indirectly related to radiation and environmental problems - but articles on medical physics and biomedical engineering will be accepted if they contribute to the understanding of fundamental mechanisms.
